Barnet

Although Barnet is just 30 minutes from the City by tube (it’s the last stop on the Northern line), it has a distinctly rural feel. Bordering the countryside of Hertfordshire, its sits on top of a hill and has a common, pretty cottages, a twice-weekly market and leafy streets. Its bustling high street is a stroll away from the heathland of Hadley Common with its duck ponds and sweeping views, and the little village of Monken Hadley nearby has a picturesque church that is popular as a wedding venue. This combination of proximity to the centre of London, pastoral pleasures and a lively villagey community has made it popular with commuters, and lifts it above the average London suburb.

Hadley Common’s open, rural aspect has attracted writers and artists over the decades. Most notably Anthony Trollope’s mother Fanny who lived in a fine Georgian house on the common, and Kingsley Amis and his wife Elizabeth Jane Howard who lived here in a double-fronted houses where they raised their son Martin Amis (he wrote The Rachel Papers and Dead Babies here).

Location-wise, Barnet is 11 miles due north from central London, with Potters Bar and Hatfield to the north, Cockfosters to the east, Totteridge and Whetstone to the south and Elstree and Borehamwood to the west. Its housing stock is varied in style and date. Detached and semi-detached Victorian and Edwardian houses near the town centre were developed after the arrival of improved transport links, and semi-detached Twenties and Thirties houses and bungalows sprung up later to cater for the new commuters. Nearly 370,000 people live here, more than any other London borough, and massive regeneration plans to build 27,000 new homes of mixed use are in progress – most of which will be in the outer part of the borough: Colindale, Brent Cross and Cricklewood. The most expensive properties are in Hadley Wood, which has handsome double-fronted Victorian and Edwardian houses, later detached houses and modern gated mansions.
